“This Is Fake” Club Chief Speaks Out Amid Claims That Arsenal Have Made Enquiry For 17M Midfielder

Zenit St Petersburg chief executive Alexander Medvedev.Has rubbished claims that Arsenal and West Ham have inquired about signing Wendel.

Reports in the Brazilian press had suggested that the two Premier League clubs had registered an interest in the midfielder, but Medvedev has played down the stories:

“Are Arsenal and West Ham Interested in Wendel? This is fake.”

Wendel joined Zenit from Sporting Lisbon for €20m (£17m) in 2020, and he has been an important player in helping his current team win two consecutive Russian Premier Liga titles.

The Gunners are on the lookout for a central midfielder, and considering technical director Edu has been keen to recruit Brazilians, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Wendel has been considered.

However, it should be pointed out that the player himself has already committed to playing another season for Zenit, so Arsenal would probably find it difficult to get him out of Russia anyway.

Lille’s Amadou Onana and Lens’ Seko Fofana have also been mentioned as options if Arsenal do go after a holding midfielder so we shall see which direction they decide to go in.
