Report: Arsenal advance move to buy 23-year-old, could be one of the most expensive signings in Gunners history

Arsenal technical director Edu has been in talks with the agent of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen in recent days.

Goal report that Osimhen’s agent flew to London last week for talks with Edu, but the club know a deal could be hard to do.

That is because of the fee he would command and the potential difficulty of negotiating with the Serie A club, who will be in next season’s Champions League.

The Gunners of course will not be after finishing fifth and it is clear that they need at least one new frontman to do better next season.

Arsenal in talks with Osimhen

Their report says: “Arsenal have held talks over a move for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen. The Napoli striker is a player high up on Arsenal’s target list this summer.

“Goal has learnt that Osimhen’s agent flew into London last week for a meeting with Arsenal’s technical director Edu to discuss a potential transfer.

“Arsenal are aware, however, that it will be very difficult to convince Napoli to part ways with their star striker.
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is known as an extremely tough negotiator and would want to receive far more than the £68 million ($85m) transfer fee that he paid Lille to sign the 23-year-old in 2020.

“And the fact Napoli have qualified for next season’s Champions League will make it even more difficult to prise Osimhen away from the Serie A club.“

It was recently reported that Tottenham are willing to battle Arsenal for Osimhen, and they can also offer Champions League football.

At such a bumper fee, can Arsenal really afford the Nigeria international and get the deal done?

It could be a record deal even going beyond what Nicolas Pepe cost the club, but that deal also shines a light on the potential risks of spending such big money.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out, but it would not be a surprise if Arsenal eventually went for a more cost-effective striker.
